So I went to meet the lady from the Eastgate where I'm putting up work in August, today, which was surprisingly scary. I learnt never to say the word "try" in front of people that are relying on my work to make their place look nice, you say "will" or something similar like that, eek. So really I need to get going with this, because I "will" be displaying work, in like 3 months time and I don't really have anything that I want to put up. I'm not getting the window though because they get fully opened so instead I'm getting loads of wall space around the theatre and cafe area, which is a bit sad as I was quite excited about doing something cool in a window, hmm. Its weird being able to do absolutely anything I want to do though- as in it won't need to pass any learning outcomes, which might mean I will produce work I actually kind of like for a change, its just a bit scary though... Hopefully there will be lots of posts with work updates on this very soon, as I really need to get on with it!

I am now finished 3rd year, which is rather scary. I have one year left until I will be forced out into the real world, its quite sad really. Anyway, my website is now up and running (just about) which has all of my work from this year, however I'm sure about half of it will be coming down straight after assessments, as well as a major redesign of it...plus I think it only works properly on safari for some reason! Now its time to get going with finding a work placement, currently setting up an interview at the moment so hopefully something will come of it. Wee picture of my CV below...

Knack Exhibition

So our little class exhibition has been and gone now, which was held at Tayburn in Edinburgh. My research into the Chaos Theory and Evolution, resulted in a pretty simple screen printed poster, based around the idea of how all of the "nothings" in life can make something happen. The word "nothing" was painstakingly popped out by a hole puncher, and then stuck back on to create the word "something".

This project has been the bane of my life for most of this academic year. I've worked half heartedly on it for last few months, and only now getting round to do something with it. The brief was to design a calendar for 2010, and I wanted to design something which would encourage people to do something with there year. So I have a designed a less conventional calendar, which works as a countdown acting as your conscience to encourage you to do something exciting. The 2010 fades as the year goes on. STILL not finished however ahhh.

So I've been back home for the easter holidays for just a few days, and have somehow managed to get myself involved with the local arts festival in August. After just enquiring about an advert appealing for local artists to exhibit work in shop windows, I have somehow managed to get a whole window of like the most expensive building in Peebles, shiiiitt. I was only enquiring! How did this happen, and what the hell am I going to put in this window, deary me, quite exciting all the same though, just a bit daunting. Aghh. I decided yes, however all I've done today is read for half an hour, and then got distracted by personal project, where I am now looking at decisions, and affecting what people do. I am considering as a point of research to send a mass text out to my friends telling them to do something like "turn around" - hense the new blog header - and then ask them to text back saying what they were doing before and after as a consequence of turning around. Oh and I've also become rather obsessed with these colours since experimenting with them when designing my cv.

I've began thinking about my personal project again, I've decided to develop my initial thoughts about evolution at the moment, but after a few days of working on it I've become slightly confused by the whole thing. I've been attempting to record every single decision/action that I have made, however I've realised that this is extremely difficult to do. I've noticed that the simplest of things, such as turning round can effect what happens within a day, which in turn effects what happens the next day, the next week, the next month and so on. I find this pretty interesting, but I'm just a little confused where I'm going to go with it...maybe that's a good thing.

Personal Project Thoughts

This week we were given a new brief to work on, which is a personal project. We can pretty much do whatever we like with it, and the finished resolution will be displayed in an exhibition in May. Although I love the thought of being able to do whatever I like with this project, I can't however help but feel slightly overwhelmed by it and a little scared by the thought of having zero direction to begin with. My disastrous attempt at doing a personal project last year, has left me feeling a little nervous about it to be honest, but hopefully I will have learnt from my mistakes and be able to produce a piece of work which I am actually happy with for a change.

My initial thoughts are pretty vague at the moment, but one of my ideas is to look at photography. My photography skills aren't really up to

much, and usually when I take a picture of something, I tend to be some what disappointed with how it looks, and how it looses the quality of what I can just see with my eyes, and wish instead of just showing a photograph I could bring someone to the photo point and show them it there and then. I was also initially thinking about doing something editorial and was thinking about doing something with real life pages, if this is still making sense at all.

These ideas may just be discarded but here's some photograp

I'm also still completely fascinated and obsessed with all things evolution as well however, and would quite like to do something with that, I'm just not sure what... I find the butterfly effect theory really interesting, and how if one little thing had or hadn't happened the world might have been completely different today. I guess I'm really talking about the element of chance and its effects, just don't really have a clue how I would develop this, shall wait and see.

Our biggest brief this term has been to come up with an identity for a new typographic gallery/museum. My gallery identity was based on the idea of redeveloping type over the years, and I also wanted to redevelop a block of flats as my building. So I came up with the name, RE Gallery. I wanted to give my building a new face to it, and wanted the name to built on to the sides of the walls, with the letters R and E, meeting at the corners of two walls. I eventually got to this logo, which is based on the perspective of the letters on the building.

Just realised today that I have not been on my blog in soo long, so I thought I would let you know what I've been up to, if you're still there?! So next couple of posts will just be a mix of some of the stuff I've been working on this term...

This is one of the one day briefs we've had this term, had to make statistics look interesting... My design detailed the amount of trees cut down in certain countries over 3 years, a very interesting topic indeed... I actually think each little "forest" might look nice as little Christmas cards (I'm getting a little excited already!).

Tidying My Room

So yesterday I was clearing out a lot of crap from my bedroom, I have this corner in my room, which is (or was) just literally filled with boxes of old stuff, and I decided it was time for it to go, as I had been putting off getting rid of it all for years. It resulted in an afternoon spent going through old school jotters, a box full of animal figures from the Early Learning Centre, about fifty Beano comics, and the occasional summer special, certificates, Lion King magazines, marbles and loads of other random things. I also found some old drawings, a couple of which I actually really like! They were prints, and I really like the effect, but have no idea how i did it, which is rather annoying, I will have to take some photos. I also discovered that I had a walking stick when I was wee that I got because I wanted to be like my Papa, I found it quite funny.

Inside Nature's Giants

So I've been watching the channel 4 documentary series, "Inside Nature's Giants", and I actually think it's so good, although I think its all finished now. They dissected an elephant, a whale, a crocodile and a giraffe, and although it was very gory and rather disgusting it was just so fascinating and thought provoking (I sound like such a geek I know, but I love things like this), and just so good that I thought I would mention it on here. I keep finding myself searching for things about evolution and natural selection on google and finding these weird and wonderful theories, and I just can't stop thinking about the way everything has happened by chance and just how things work and what things might be like in a million years from now, ahhhh its mad. I want to sit down with a scientist and just ask them lots and lots of questions. I wish i was a scientist. Hmmm. But yeah, if you haven't seen the programmes, 4od it 'cos its well good eh.

Seeing this guys work, Ori Toor, (even though I don't love it) has just made me totally miss the days of colouring in things with a really good coloured crayon. Ordinary pencils, pens and prints have taken over my life, I forgot about my lovely crayons and I need them back, they're going right at the top of my shopping list for when I get my first pay slip!

So last night, I couldn't be bothered going to bed, because I was sleepy, stupid I know, but anyway, somehow I started thinking about all of those questions I always wonder about, like why is there a universe, or anything anyway, and what would there be if there wasnt the universe, and so on. But anyway I started googling things about evolution, another fascinating topic haha, and I was looking at theories about how humans will evolve in the future and discovered this theory about how we will split into two sub-species, one which is tall, strong, healthy, attractive and intelligent, the other being small, stupid, ugly and goblin like. How lovely.

so, i just found these photos i took a while ago of these composer posters which wouldn't upload as files for some reason. photos are really awful oops.

this poster was for teenagers, was an interactive poster based on stylized russian dolls (rachmaninoff is from the town where these were originally made) and the coloured shapes could be popped out, and then folded to create a set of dolls, with info on them to act as personal leaflets. a new design would appear when the front layer was removed. can't find the images of the dolls though!

this poster was based around Rachmaninoff's state of mind, where he was often depressed and hated a lot of his work.

I finally have a job for summer...or almost. I have a trial at the County (my local) tonight, actually in one hour 6 minutes, and like everything else new to me, I'm stressing out. I've never worked in a bar before, and I'm already worrying about every possible thing that could go wrong. Okay, I've decided from now on, I'm going to use this blog properly, as up until now its been used rather half heartedly, partly down to the blog not letting me upload half the stuff i want to (maybe i should use a different blog?).

So, finished up for the summer and passed 2nd year, thank goodness! And after spending what seemed like weeks in the print room, Mary actually like my book and poster, which was a nice end to the year.

Also, headed along to the Nigel Peake exhibition going on at Schop gallery in Edinburgh at the moment; not a huge exhibition but as usual the stuff on show was fantastic. I just don't understand how he has the patience to draw all of those tiny lines!

Everyday I walk through the Meadows to get to college, and I've noticed how all the trees have these little blue tags with a number on, which for some reason I've been intrigued by. I've been wanting to do something with them all this year and finally decided to do something about it by photographing every tag on the path today....not sure what I'm going to do with them though (if I even do anything with them that is).

Collaborative project with illustration, brief was to produce a net, which can be made into a 3d object based on the theme, "If You Go Down To The Woods Today". We produced decorations for bare trees, where you would plant a seed inside the leaf style plant pot, and hopefully life would be brought back to the tree.

Have You Been Missing Me?

Okay so I realise I've been ignoring the blog for the past month or so, but I have actually been rather busy, after being ill, then catching up with the mounds of work we seem to have been getting after returning from the christmas holidays, all about the fundamentals of designs, layout, balance, kerning, blah, blah, blah, and then getting 3 weeks to do two posters based on the bane of my life Sergei Rachmaninoff (why this man didn't commit suicide to make my life better I will never know), and although 3 weeks seems like a pretty long time, and I was in the studio until about 6pm most nights and working on it every day, I still managed to be in the studio with Emma Lally and Emma Un-Lally until quarter to midnight the night before the crit, doing last minute work. That was a really long sentence, I'd be getting in trouble if that was an english essay oops. Anyway, so here I am, writing from Peebles, as I decided to go home for the weekend to make the most of having almost no work to do, getting waited on hand and foot, after having my crit for those bloody Rachmaninoff posters, which went surprisingly well, so here they are.....(if this site ever lets me upload them, its being slooowww)

I'm not really sure why I decided to set this up...I keep finding myself staying up late sitting on Facebook for no reason, so I thought that setting up a blog might be more productive, however at the same time by doing this I'm completely ignoring the piece of paper next to me with the only words written sayin "C.V.C.S. Essay" and then underneath a small doodle...this could just become another distraction. Not really sure what I'm actually going to use this for either, I might never even use it, but if I do I hope I can think of a better name for my blog than "Jamie Scott's Blog" as that seems a tad boring.
